Motion & Mechanisms

Experiments in physical interactions. Investigating the mathematical motions of physical objects and how those objects perform when a force is applied.

These studies examine the beautiful underlining rhythmical predictability of mechanical motion.

Virtual & Real Installation

An exploration into the relationship and disparity between virtual environments and physical replications.

In a room 610cm x 244cm there are two wall mounted projection screens facing each other. In front of the screen on the left sits an Macintosh G5 computer. In front of the other screen there is a model of 25 geometric cuboids laid in grid.

A virtual replication of the physical model is contained in the computer. The computer controls two stepper motors which in turn control the movements of a miniature camera, mounted on a custom built track incorporated into the physical model. The viewpoint of the camera is the same as the pre-recorded virtual animation.

A Max/Jitter interface controls both the virtual playback and the movements of the camera. The virtual video is displayed on the screen above the model and the real time footage from the camera is projected above the computer.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/31075/921745/StillFlight_800.jpg" width="700" height="285" width_o="700" height_o="285" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/31075/921745/StillFlight_o.jpg" data-mid="4425204" border="0" align="left"/>

The track is designed on the basis of a two plane plotting system. The Camera Dolly joins the two cross gliders at their meeting point. It is designed to move along both the X and Z planes, allowing the camera to cover anywhere within the confines of the outer track. Depending on the clockwise or anti-clockwise rotation of either motor the camera will move in either direction.

Drawing with Sound

An audio speaker incorporated with a purpose built drawing system. The vibrations from the speaker oscillate an ink nib which draws seismographic-like notations on a fixed sheet of paper.

A rotating swing-arm carries the speaker and drawing apparatus. On each rotation the drawing nib and speaker are wound closer to the fulcrum, carried on a dolly which slides along the swing-arm, creating an inward spiral.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/31075/913598/machine2_800.jpg" width="700" height="467" width_o="700" height_o="467" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/31075/913598/machine2_o.jpg" data-mid="4406045" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/31075/913598/machine1_800.jpg" width="700" height="467" width_o="700" height_o="467" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/31075/913598/machine1_o.jpg" data-mid="4406043" border="0" align="left"/>

The resulting drawings reference the pre-digital innovation of the phonograph and the original process of listening to and recording sound.

The mathematical element of the project is further expressed through the spiral format of the kinetic drawings. In creating circular linear motions in which each rotation draws closer to the centre, the dynamics of the spiral movement are expressed. (As realised with the physics of the phonograph) this allows for a large length of auditory information to be aesthetically embodied within a circular entity.
